Camera shots
There are various ways to make a movie interesting and fun to watch and one of those ways is to have multiple camera shots and for each one to be different. Annabelle has accomplished that and has used many different ones. The first one I noticed was a medium shot, that stood out to me because I could see the characters facial expressions and body language both in one shot. The medium shot appeared when a female characters was stood in her nighty looking petrified and like she had been crying, she was fiddling with her hands and that shows she's nervous. The next shot I saw was an over the shoulder shot, this shot came in at 0:02 it was only up for about 30 seconds but it showed a female character who seemed really vulnerable, she looked like she had been crying. The next shot was a birds eye view that came in at 0:05, it shows the scenery of the new children's home that the main character - a young girl of the age of roughly 9/10. It shows the greenery, the building and how the weather is on that day. This is an effective shot as it shows the audience what the scenery is and where it will all be set. Long shot came up at the beginning, it shows all the young girls with a few adults walking down the steps on one of the adults houses, all the characters look happy and cheerful which suggests that they are having a good time and they are dressed up nice and look like they are going out for either a party or a meal. The close up shows the main male character sitting at the dinner table saying a blessing, this suggests that they are religious and say a prayer before they eat their meals. The next shot is a 2 shot and it shows the mother and father of a young girl as they walk into her bedroom and she is possessed of some type, they look very emotional and very wary. This is effective as people get to see both the parents reactions and how they treat the situation. An establishing shot is the next one to come up it shows the new orphanage that a young girl will be staying at, she's being dropped of and it shows the scenery when this is happening. This is effective as you can see what the scenery looks like now as its changed from what it was earlier, again this is effective as it updates the audience of the scenery and how the setting feels. A low angle was inserted at 0:41 of the new young orphanage girl turning up at her new care home, this is effective as you can see her facial reactions and how she shows her emotions. Having this at a low angle suggests that she is vulnerable and she doesn't have any power. This is effective as you know she is the new girl and that she's scared and because of that you follow her every step of the way in the movie. There is now an extreme close up of the doll Annabelle which is what the movie is about, you can see her scary face and how she just looks eerie and like she doesn't belong at that house. The young girl doesn't like it at the start but as it goes on she begins to get drawn to it and she loves it. This is also effective as you then know what the other half of the movie is and why and how things are happening. At the end there is a high angle show which is looking down the where Annabelle is, this suggests that the doll has power and is in control of what happens, this is effective as it then suggests that a lot happens in the movie and there could be a sequel.
Pace of editing
The pace of editing is quite fast at the start; the intervals of the shots are 2/3 seconds each, this is done because you can get more of that scene into a 30 second slot but the best parts weren't chosen as then it would give away too much of the movie. As the film progresses the pace of the editing gets slower and it lasts about 5/6 seconds as the movie does this it starts to show the better parts of the movie but not the best so again it doesn't give away too much. The audience find this effective as they aren't being shown the best parts of the film so when they watch it in the cinema there are parts that surprise them and they don't know everything that happens.
Music
In the duration of the trailer there isn't much music that plays in the background as they emphasise the sound effects and the speech of the main characters. The music that does play is very low piano notes, they are very eerie and give a atmosphere to the scene. The notes are only played when there is a very dramatic scene and that's what makes the scene scary, they don't play throughout the whole trailer as it would be too much music. There is quite a bit of speech so even if there was more music it would go over the speech causing it to not be as clear.
Costumes
The costumes of the family at the beginning were very smart; it was set roughly in the 1960's and for the 60's these were quite expensive clothes and they were very privileged to have bought these. They were dressed as if they were going out for a party or a meal so they dressed accordingly. A few seconds later they were sitting round the dinner table saying a blessing; they daughter had recently passed away as she was involved in a car accident. The costumes they were wearing then were just normal everyday clothing that you lounge around in, this is best suitable as they are grieving. As the clip goes on you seem them carrying on with their everyday lives and they carry on with similar costumes (everyday clothing) but that's when they come across the little girls spirit running around their home. The young girl is wearing what seems to be either everyday clothing also or her nightwear. The young girls that are orphans that turn up at their new house are wearing smart but everyday clothing also. This is used because it makes them look like they are the same as everyone else and so no one gets picked on also, there wasn't much of a range of clothing in the 1960's so they have to wear what they can have. All of these consist throughout the rest of the clip and they all wear similar clothing to what they had already, this is effective as it doesn't show who has power and money and they are all made to feel the same as everyone else so there isn't any bullying or arguing over them.
Titles
The first titles that came into the clip were at 30 seconds and that shows who the Production companies were and who made the film. The next title came in at 1:28 and this told us who the producer was - James Wan, as he's a famous producer many people will know who he is so that could be why some of the audience watch the movie when it comes out. At 1:34 we get told that the director also made another movie called "Lights Out" this is effective as if people think that that movie was a hit then they could maybe come and watch the new movie Annabelle. 6 seconds later the airing date is given to us - August 11, this is effective as people can book in advance to go and watch the movie in cinema as it will get booked out really quickly. After all the important information has been given out they then add quotes to add an extra eerie feel to it. At 1:51the quote - NOTHING CAN PREPARE YOU came up on the screen to hint that the horror movie is a lot scarier than it seems and you could go in and come out shook as it was so scary. Then 7 seconds later "FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER" which carries on from the first quote so it says nothing can prepare you for the next chapter which could either shake the audience even more or could not effect them but if it does scare them even more than the editor done what they wanted. The right at the end "Annabelle Creation" comes up telling you what the name of the movie is so you know all the details about the movie. Having all of the titles scattered throughout the clip is effective as it fits in perfectly with the clips and doesn't interrupt the footage, the audience expect titles to come up right at the beginning or right in the middle so it makes the trailer seem really short.
How we know what genre it is
We know what genre it is because of the setting, the mise-en-scene and everything in general. They use an accident/killing at the beginning so everyone knows that there is a spirit in the rest of the film. They also use the spirit for everything that happened in the movie, the little girl that passed away turns into a nasty spirit and she kills other little girls but she specifically picks the weakest ones first so its easier for her to kill them. There were knives used and just the set up of the plot, you know its a horror. They start of with an freak accident, the little girl then turns into a poltergeist and kills loads of people either using weapons or just lures them and then depending on how that ends they could suggest a sequel.
Mise En Scene
There are quite a few things used in this movie to make sure you know its a horror movie and just props they use in general. The first thing they use is a car, this is used to cause an accident and the driver runs over the young girl that then possesses the house. This is used so the audience know that the little girl died so they know what the rest of the movie is about. After that there are written notes all around the house that are slid under the doors to a certain person for them to open and read and be lured into another room. This is effective as it makes you wonder what's going to happen when they get into the other room, it causes tension and gives off an eerie feel to the audience. Another main part of the movie that is a prop is the doll Annabelle, she's a creepy old fashioned doll with a very eerie face that just gives you the chills when you look at her. This is an effective prop as its also one of the main characters, she's a major part in the movie and without her the movie would be completely different she is what makes the movie complete and she isn't even a human. Mise-en-scene is a major part in a movie or documentary as without that it would just be people talking and that would be quite boring and people would stop watching it nearly instantly.
